Self-care is a critical part of maintaining wellness. You will be with yourself for the rest of your life. You need to care for your body and mind to maintain your health. That includes your physical and mental wellbeing. Things that matter are eating well, exercising, seeing a therapist when needed, and having fun. If you’re going to live life to the fullest, you need to nurture your mind and body. Here are ways that you can maintain self-care practices.

What is self-care?

Self-care is the active effort to take care of your wellbeing. That means eating the right foods, exercising, and giving yourself what you need. People have different needs. We all need to eat and sleep. That’s something that all human beings share. However, self-care means unique things to people. You could enjoy taking a bath to care for yourself. Other individuals like to curl up and read a book on the couch. Self-care is what you make of it. Think of things that you enjoy that make you feel calm and do those.

What do you enjoy?

Of course, you want to take care of yourself, but you need to figure out what that means. Take out a pen and paper (or make a note on your phone) And write down a list of five things that you enjoy. They could be things you like to do, activities like running or riding a bike. Or they could be things that you engage in, such as watching movies or singing. Some people like to write in their journals. It’s essential to figure out the things that you like to do so that you can engage in them more often. One of the most essential things is scheduling regular times to engage in self-care.

A self-care schedule

It’s crucial to set a self-care schedule. If you don’t set time to do things that are fun, you won’t get them done. We have schedules for work. We also have times when we meet with our friends and family. You can factor into your schedule time for self-care. Maybe that means you write it in your Google calendar. Or you can write it in a planner. However, you can remember to take care of yourself, do that. When you have a schedule that incorporates self-care activities, it’s easier to practice it. It might sound over the top, but it’s crucial to remind yourself to take care of yourself.

Don’t let others guilt you into not taking care of yourself

Part of self-care is setting boundaries. It means saying no when you cannot do something. People ask you to help them. You can provide support if you have the emotional and physical ability to do that. But you don’t have to help people all the time. You have the right to say no if you’re unable to assist people with their projects. You can say no if you don’t have the emotional space to handle something at the moment. The most important thing is you take care of your mental and physical health. And that means putting yourself first. Self-care is not selfish. It is about survival.

Learn self-care in therapy

Therapy is an excellent place to practice self-care. If you’re not sure how to care for yourself, you can talk to a therapist about strategies to do that. A therapist is a non-judgmental person who wants to help you learn to nurture yourself. Self-care is a part of physical and emotional wellness, and it is crucial to engage in it. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you are having trouble caring for yourself.
